Legislative Accomplishments

Over the past three years, I have worked hard as member of the Virginia House of Delegates to represent the people of the Sixth District.  We have faced tough problems and come up with positive solutions.

Getting Results for Southwest Virginia...

Transportation:
I supported the comprehensive transportation solution that continues to streamline V-DOT, reforms land-use practices and adds $1.3 billion in new funding for road and rail projects annually, without a major state-wide tax increase.

Economic Development:
I have always been a strong supporter of economic development in Southwest Virginia. As a member of the Wythe County Board of Supervisors, we worked hard to bring in WTI, Atsumi Car Equipment and Gatorade. As a delegate, I sponsored legislation that solidified an economic development partnership between Tazewell County, VA and Mercer County, W.VA.

Eminent Domain:
In 2007, I voted for HR 2954, which strengthens the definition of public use to protect property owners. This new law will keep court decisions, like Kelo vs. New London, from happening in Virginia.

Education:
The General Assembly has made record investments in education by adding almost $2 billion more in Public Education funding, including increases in teacher pay. We also increased Higher Education funding by 21%.

Health Care:
We have increased funding for Health Care by 19%: including increased support for Medicaid, Mental Health and substance abuse services.

Public Safety:
We increased funding for Public Safety by 17%: including an increase in correctional officer pay. We have also passed legislation to better protect our families from illegal drugs and internet predators.

I have had a very positive and productive first term in the House of Delegates. I look forward to the opportunity to continue to serve the people of the Sixth District in Richmond. I ask for your support to continue our positive work for Virginia.
